Obstacles to gratitude in life, from the perspective of Islamic texts

Abstract

Among the forgotten virtues in Islamic society is gratitude to God. This is while in the Qur'an and Islamic traditions, on the one hand, the practice of this moral virtue has been greatly emphasized and miraculous results have been mentioned for it, and on the other hand, ungratefulness has been strictly forbidden and blamed. Reviving this moral virtue and using it in life first requires removing its obstacles. The purpose of this research is to examine Islamic texts in order to determine from this point of view, what are the obstacles that cause people to avoid being grateful to God and to live gratefully and to deprive themselves of its wonderful effects in life. In order to achieve this goal, Islamic texts, especially narrative texts, were analyzed by descriptive analytical method, and the result was the division of obstacles into two types, internal and external. In the internal obstacles, the most important obstacle was the "ignorance" and "negligence" of a person, which was either towards "prohibition" or towards "blessing". In the analysis of why ignorance and neglect towards "blessings" is an obstacle to gratitude, three reasons were found from Islamic texts: "abundance of blessings", "inclusiveness of blessings" and "underestimation of blessings". In external obstacles, three factors of "immigration", "devil" and "attractions of the world" were listed as the most important obstacles
